Poetry!

Hello everybody!

Poetry.. What exactly is poetry?? Is it verses that rhyme..? Or is it something more than that? Something that gives us an insight into the mind of the poet.. The mind that constantly thinks and yearns to delve into the reality of things… Or, is it something that covers up harsh truth and presents bleak matters in a flowery language? Or is it the contrary.. .?Something that exposes the bitter reality.

According to the dictionary, poetry is literature in metrical form. But, I don’t think that actually encompasses the whole meaning of poetry. Poetry is not just a form of writing. It is much more than that. As Wordsworth has said, “Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility.” I completely agree with this definition. Poetry is not something that you can “plan” and write. The urge to write comes from within.. You can write poetry only about things that you can connect with, things that you love, things that move you. While writing a poem, you can feel the thousand emotions inside your head.. Tiny little voices that are awaiting to be put on paper. Once you start writing, you cannot stop. The poem completely draws you into it and transcends you to a completely new world – a world devoid of mundanity and normality. When you are writing the poem, there is a feeling within.. A sort of contentment and happiness.. A feeling like none other. After all the spontaneous emotions have poured out.. You have created a beautiful poem!

Poetry can change minds, change the mind sets of people. It is a very powerful tool that can be used to leave a deep imprint in a person’s mind, enough to make him think and muse over the content of the poem. It can relax the overworked mind and fill it with thoughts that are pleasant. Even while reading poetry, when you read a verse so well written, a verse that describes you, a verse that puts your thoughts and opinions in a nutshell or a verse that is simply just beautiful, you are happy.. You feel one with the poet and you are inspired to do many a thing.. Be it Wordsworth or Longfellow or Vikram Seth, their poems have the innate capacity to drastically change mind sets and outlook towards life. Poetry must simply be understood and appreciated for its brilliance…..just as it is created for the pure joy of writing.

Some might find poetry boring.. Some might call it just a fantasy.. But, end of the day, it cannot be denied that poetry hasn’t affected them in some way. Poetry must be something that everyone appreciates and everyone is inspired to indulge in..poetry definitely adds that extra zing to our lives and helps us think and lead life more poignantly, meaningfully, thoughtfully…..and joyfully 🙂

  1. Great post! Poetry for me is about expressing my feelings when I write. Reading other people’s poetry is like a journey down their road. My favourite poets are Years, Wordsworth and Pablo Neruda. 🙂

  2. Hi Deeksha,

Glad to read that you are so enthusiastic about reading and writing poetry. Your post is full of happiness and joy, delight and vigour in the writing process, and yet many times, poetry is an expression of the deepest sadness, grief, loss or heartbreak. Wouldn’t you agree?
